The door, the frame and the hinges, in one flat packed kit. Pick your size and swing above and choose your hinge colour. The kit arrives knocked down: the door, the frame pieces and the hinges travel flat in one package, and you put the frame together in your opening. It is the flat packed version of a prehung door (a door that ships already hung in its frame as one assembled unit): the same parts, machined the same way to line up, just shipped apart so it fits in a car and up a staircase. Our frame assembly guide shows every step with pictures.

A note on the photos: the pictures show the door after it has been assembled and installed, so you can see the finished result. The kit ships flat packed, not as an assembled unit, and the room photo includes casing (the decorative trim around the frame) and a handle, which are sold separately.

The door

A 2 Panel Smooth hollow core interior door, primed white and ready for your paint. The hinge pockets (the shallow recesses in the edge of the door where each hinge sits flush) and the handle hole are already machined, so there is no routing or chiselling to do on site. Hollow core, so it is light to carry and easy for one person to hang.

The frame, also called the jamb

The jamb is the wooden frame your door hangs in. Yours is primed finger joint pine, machined to match the door, and it is a 4-5/8 inch jamb. That is the standard depth for a 2x4 wall, which is what almost every interior wall in a house is built from. Every kit uses this jamb, so there is nothing to work out.

Want a closer look at the pine we use? See it on its own page. Building on a thicker 2x6 wall? That wall needs a 6-5/8 inch jamb, which this kit does not include. Go to Customize Your Own instead: pick your door there and choose the 6-5/8 inch jamb as you build it.

The hinges

Two 3 inch hinges come with every kit, in matte black or satin nickel. Choose the finish above. The hinges arrive already screwed to the hinge side of the frame, and the door edge has the matching recesses machined, so the door is ready to hang as soon as the frame is together. That is why you pick your swing above: the machining is matched to a left hand or a right hand door.

How it goes together

Flat packed. The pieces are machined to line up, so there is no measuring or chiselling: you join the frame in the opening and hang the door on its hinges, all with basic tools. The frame assembly guide walks through it step by step.

What you still need

  • A door handle, add one here. It fits the hole we cut.
  • A door stop, which is the thin strip of wood on the frame that the door closes against. It is not included in the kit, add one here.
  • Casing, which is the decorative trim around the frame, plus paint and basic tools.

Which size and swing do I pick?

Order the same size as the door you are replacing. The size is the door itself, so a 30 x 80 is 30 inches wide and 80 inches tall. For the swing, stand with your back against the hinge side: if the handle is on your left, you want left hand. The diagrams above show both, and our measuring guide walks through measuring with pictures.
